Chakras
The chakras (pronounced 'chuck-ruhs') are energy centers in (and around) the body which correspond to various aspects of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. As electromagnetic beings, many chakras exist throughout the body, but there are seven main chakras that exist along the midline of the body, starting from the base of the spine and progressing up to the crown of the head. They include:
- Root/Muladhara Chakra: center of safety/security and connection to the earth/physical realm; associated color is red, and associated element is earth
- Sacral/Svadhisthana Chakra: center of creativity, sensuality, and the ability to flow with life's constant changes; associated color is orange, and associated element is water
- Solar Plexus/Manipura Chakra: center of individuality, willpower, and self-esteem; associated color is yellow, and associated element is fire
- Heart/Anahata Chakra: center of pure love and compassion for self and others; associated color is green, and associated element is air
- Throat/Vishuddha Chakra: center of self-expression, honesty, and alignment between inner and outer states/expression; associated color is blue, and associated element is space
- Third Eye/Ajna Chakra: center of intuition and the seat of the soul; associated color is indigo, and associated element is ether
- Crown/Sahasrara Chakra: center of connection with the infinite, Source, and all of existence across time and space (our true, big 'S' Self); the Crown chakra transcends colors and elements but is sometimes associated with the colors white and indigo and the element of light
Yoga practices can aid in clearing energetic blockages and balancing the chakras for optimal health and progression on the spiritual path. However, please note that activating the chakras requires a significant amount of practice, discipline, and divine support. Attempting to activate and open the chakras without proper preparation and practice can lead to health issues and worsen imbalances.
