Sanskrit

Sanskrit is the language of yoga (and also considered to be the language of the universe) and forms the basis of many modern Indian languages. Sanskrit is a feeling language, which means the emphasis is placed on how the words sound and the feelings and states of consciousness they evoke. In Umi Yoga classes, we use the Sanskrit names of many poses in an act of respect and honor for the roots of yoga, as well as to connect with the deeper meaning and feeling of the pose. Sometimes, students may be invited to practice mantra using Sanskrit words and phrases. To learn more about Sanskrit, click here.
